Chinese food has for long been incredibly popular, mainly due to Chinese immigrants opening delicious restaurants all around the world. But what a lot of people are not familiar with is Chinese street breakfast food. Not only are they really cheap (like more than dollar store cheap), they're also incredibly delicious. The variety is endless, and if you walk down a street in China in the morning, you'd have an endless choice of breakfast street food to choose from. Here are 5 of what we think are the yummiest.
1. You Tiao (油条), or Chinese fried dough

You tiao, or Chinese fried dough, is simply a long deep-fried stick of dough. It's one of the most common Chinese breakfast street food and is often eaten with either porridge, a variation of Chinese pancakes, or on its own. The exterior is usually a bit crunchy, and the interior is soft, airy and a little bit chewy. While a bit oily, they are incredibly delicious and a definite must-try!
2. Jian Bing (煎饼), or Chinese savoury crepes

Jian bing is a Chinese savoury crepe usually served by street food carts for breakfast. These crepes are made with wheat, grain flour, and eggs and are often filled with crispy fried crackers, hoisin sauce, mustard pickles, scallions, coriander, and chilli sauce. The mix of salty, sweet, sour, spicy flavours along with the chewy crepe and crispy cracker textures makes this dish one of our favourite breakfast food. It's one of the most popular go-to breakfast items for many Chinese students and we can definitely see why!
3. Dou Hua (豆花)

Dou hua is a dish made with very soft tofu often eaten with a variety of sweet or savoury sauces. In Northern Chinese cuisine, they are eaten with soy sauce and topped with green onions, coriander, and spices. In Cantonese cuisine, these can often be found in dim sums where they are served with sweet ginger sauce. They're simple but very flavourful and dare we say, satisfying to eat. Whether they are sweet or savoury, any way they are made we love them and you will too!
4. Cong You Bing (葱油饼), or scallion pancakes

This one is also one of our personal favourites. Cong you bing, or scallion pancakes, are crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside and topped with the fragrant flavours of the scallions. And this is not like the ordinary pancakes. These pancakes are of course, deep fried, which gives it that unbelievable crunchy exterior. And the interior has so many layers of chewy goodness. These usually cost about 50 cents or so and a great breakfast or snack to have on the go.
5. Sheng Jian (生煎), or soup-filled pan-fried steamed buns

A Shanghai speciality, sheng jian is a steamed bun with a pan-fried bottom and filled with pork and gelatine that melts into a hot, flavourful soup. It's basically steamed buns with upgrades. You have the crispy texture, you have the flavourful soup inside along with the delicious pork, and the chewy texture of the bun itself. The sesame and green onion toppings are also great compliments to all these great flavours. It's a staple breakfast dish in Shanghai and you definitely have to try it because they are very addictingly delicious!
